My Bio
KONO VIO DA! I’m Violeta Mediavilla (Manta, 2001), an interactive media designer, game developer, and visual artist from Ecuador with an endless fascination for video games, experimental technologies, and weird art movements born on the internet. I hold a B.A. in “Interactive Media Design” with a minor in “Art and Technology” from Universidad San Francisco de Quito (2025). As a Latina creator with a background in both computer science and design, some of my fondest memories involve venturing into digital worlds to imagine how we might improve our own.
I’ve worked as a virtual reality developer and UI/UX researcher at Internet Technology and Data Science Lab in Ghent, Belgium (2023). I was a technical research assistant in data science visualization and storytelling at the interdisciplinary laboratory Data Hub USFQ (2024). I’ve collaborated closely with academic departments at Universidad San Francisco de Quito (2022 - 2024) to promote spaces and events dedicated to fostering new media art explorations and showcasing national artists. More recently I worked as community manager for GameTimeContinuum (2026), an online educational ecosystem focused on democratizing game development tools and resources in South America.
I was interviewed by Diario El Comercio (2026) about my creative practices and views on Ecuador’s game development landscape. My work has been exhibited at creative hubs such as NEXOS 6.0, Q Galería, and ConQuito. In early 2026, I was awarded a full scholarship for the Re:Play Master’s in Game Design, an international program centered on the design, development, and cultural impact of video games supported by the European Union. My studies will begin later this year across several universities in Europe.
Beyond studying and exploring the relationship between humans and computers, I love visiting and donating to animal shelters. I currently help as an independent rescuer and volunteer. In the distant future, I hope to start my own shelter!

Artist Statement
My work combines immersive technologies, experimental storytelling, critical theory, and empathetic design to create powerful, emotionally resonant interactive experiences. I refer to my projects as playful media, as they take the form of interactive art installations in augmented, virtual, and mixed reality; real-time reactive visuals; hybrid and mixed-media animation; creative coding; physical computing; and other playful experiments in which the audience (human, animal, or plant), becomes the main actor.
My recent practice centers on legitimizing videogames as an art form by challenging traditional notions of what games are supposed to be and pushing the boundaries of what this vast creative medium can offer. When developing games and larger projects, my hybrid profile allows me to act as a bridge between artistic and technical fields, working closely with musicians, writers, illustrators, engineers, programmers, and other designers. My style is defined by a balance between my staple aesthetic of colorful controlled chaos and themes of speculative fiction that reframe identity and the value of cultural heritage in an increasingly digital world.
I’m especially drawn to collaborative work in international and interdisciplinary environments, where diverse voices, cultures, and ways of thinking can shape experiences rooted in care, curiosity, and radical hope. Creating games that help us reconnect with our more human side is what makes me feel alive. My goal is to grow as a game designer who raises awareness around sensitive topics and contributes to collective healing through play, one pixel at a time.
